off|line ['ɔfla̮in ] <Adv.> [engl.; eigtl. = ohne Verbindung, aus: off = weg u. line = (Verbindungs)linie, Leitung] (EDV):
1. getrennt von der Datenverarbeitungsanlage, indirekt mit dieser gekoppelt; dezentral arbeitend.
2. nicht ans Datennetz, ans Internet angeschlossen; außerhalb des Datennetzes, des Internets.

[dt. »unverbunden«], Bezeichnung für den Zustand, in dem ein Gerät weder mit einem anderen kommunizieren noch von diesem gesteuert werden kann. Bei Netzwerken spricht man von offline, wenn ein einzelner Computer keine Verbindung zum Netz hat. Auch wenn ein Peripheriegerät, beispielsweise ein Drucker, keine Verbindung zum Computer hat, bezeichnet man diesen Zustand als offline. Das Gegenteil von offline ist online.
 
 
Es spart Kosten, wenn Sie Texte, die versandt werden sollen (etwa als E-Mail oder an eine Newsgroup), bereits vor der Einwahl offline schreiben. Sobald die Online-Verbindung besteht, können die vorgeschriebenen Texte dann in das E-Mail-Programm kopiert und verschickt werden, am einfachsten über die Zwischenablage.
